The two women who refused to leave the Cook County (Chicago) marriage license bureau when they were refused a marriage license have been sentenced to a year in jail each. GCN reports Anne WeldHarrington, former President of the Cleveland Gay Activists Alliance, has announced her candidacy for the office of State Representative from the second Barnstable district in Provincetown. Squaring off against Republican incumbent Howard areas.... Cahoon, Harrington will appear on the ballot as an independent candidate. Earlier this year, she ran 4th in a race for Selectperson in Provincetown. Harrington views herself as a liberal. An open lesbian and the mother of two children, she supports the right of women to choose abortion, backs gay rights legislation, opposes capital punishment and favors moratorium on construction of nuclear power plants....

Another GCN news item indicates Britain's Independent Television Network ITV) recently walked out of the Prague International Festival after one of its entries, The Naked Civil Servant, a dramatization of the autobiography of gay civil servant, Quentin Crisp was barred from the festival by Czech organizers. The production was an official entry in the drama category. Those who organized the festival claimed the play "was not in harmony with the main festival idea" which was to "serve mutual knowledge and better understanding between nations by contributing to the strengthening of positive human values."...??? ...

At its recent bi-annual elections the New York Gay Activists Alliance appointed Joanne Passaro as GAA's first woman president in its almost seven year history. James Zepp, former Media Committee chairperson, was chosen Vice President. In a joint statement, Passaro and Zepp declare one of their aims to be the expansion of the Gay Activists Alliance membership. Women and men will be encouraged to join with GAA to work together in the Gay Liberation struggle....

Boston's Gay Community News reports that some New York gays have organized into a group called SMASH (Society to Make America Safe for Homosexuals) to protect gays who are attacked by gangs of local youths. SMASH, in essence, fights violence with violence.
